How

How would it work?

The source of the industry benchmarking project entails gathering simple Key Performance Indicator data from your dealers and those of other participating motorcycle franchises. The data will be processed into a definitive monthly or quarterly industry report. The web based report would enable your dealers to see their own performance against an average of dealers within your brand plus the wider ability to compare against an overall industry benchmark, until now never before available in Australia.

Data integrity is paramount and no other manufacturer or importer will see your individual data, nor that of your dealers, only you will see that. Everyone will see only the consolidated industry averages.

You, as the OEM/importer, will have access not only to the industry benchmark information, but also to a further suite of reports looking at comparisons against a basket of other brands. OEMs/Importers will be able to select the basket of brands against which to make comparisons which will give you the flexibility to see your own brand KPI performance against the total industry average.

Also available is the KPI average of those brands who you see as your main competitors, which may be all Japanese brands, or a combined selection of maybe BMW, Harley, Ducati etc, you choose.

apd Australia provides Inter Firm Comparison (composite) data to the motorcycle industry in Australia and for motorcycle, car and truck industries through our UK subsidiary in the UK and Europe. In addition, we also provide a similar KPI benchmarking service to a number of automotive franchises in the UK. The key benefit for many of them is the ability to measure their franchise against similar types of business as well as the whole industry. Some Key Performance Indicators may well be specific to particular volumes, customer profile, prestige etc. Examples would be sales person productivity, retail labour rates, accessory sales, F& I performance – many of which are related to volume as much as best practice policies and procedures, for example in 2006 in a similar motorcycle cross brand survey

  • Average annual motorcycle sales per sales person was 125
  • Average retail labour recovery rate was £49.22 ($105.94 AUD)
  • 15% of all new bikes sold were sold on finance at a commission of £247 ($531 AUD) per case

This project cannot happen without the active involvement of the Australian motorcycle brands. Initially, we would very much like to gauge your interest in such a project, and working with Cameron Cuthill at BMW Motorrad Australia we would like to tell you more at your next available motorcycle association meeting.

You will have many questions like:

  • How will it work?
  • What will it cost?

We will provide you with full details in a short, but informative presentation if you decide you would like to see more.
